Does Your Los Angeles Home Need Rewiring? Warning Signs, Costs & What to Expect

Older homes throughout Los Angeles County are full of character, and often, outdated wiring. Knob-and-tube wiring from the 1940s, aluminum wiring from the 1960s and 70s, and ungrounded two-prong outlets are all signs your home's electrical system hasn't kept pace with modern demands. For many homeowners across the Antelope Valley, Santa Clarita, and the San Fernando Valley, a full rewire is one of the most important safety investments they'll make.

At B&M Electrical Services, we perform complete residential rewiring projects across Los Angeles County, fully permitted, safely executed, and built to last.

Warning Signs Your Home Needs Rewiring

  • Two-prong outlets throughout: Ungrounded wiring, a shock and fire risk by today's standards.
  • Knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring: Both are flagged by insurance companies and non-compliant with current electrical code.
  • Frequently tripping breakers: Wiring that can't handle modern electrical loads.
  • Burning smell or discolored outlets: Heat buildup in aging wiring, a serious fire hazard.
  • Flickering lights or intermittent power: Degraded insulation or loose connections throughout old wiring.

The Aluminum Wiring Problem

Homes built between 1965 and 1973 may contain aluminum wiring, which expands and contracts with heat cycles, loosening connections over time and increasing fire risk significantly. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), homes with aluminum wiring are 55 times more likely to have wire connections reach fire-hazard conditions. This requires professional remediation, not monitoring.

What a Full Rewire Involves

A complete rewire replaces all branch circuit wiring throughout your home with modern copper wire, installs grounded outlets, adds GFCI and AFCI protection where required, and typically pairs with a panel upgrade to bring everything up to current NEC standards. Every rewire we perform is fully permitted through LA County Building & Safety.

Will Your Insurance Require It?

Many California insurance carriers now require homes with knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring to be rewired before issuing or renewing homeowners policies. Getting ahead of this protects your coverage, and your family.

I had a great experience with this electrical service. The team showed up on time, worked efficiently, and finished the job faster than I expected while still doing everything the right way. The price was very fair compared to other quotes I received, which made the whole experience even better because the quality of work was still top-notch. I also want to give a shout out to Barrett for being pr…

Barrett came out and gave me a good price on the work. They replaced my electrical panel and installed a disconnect for my AC unit. Then the next day, had a guy come out to patch up the wall and paint when the stucco dried. He also had the number of an AC technician for me to call to move a thermostat wire. Overall, great work and very communicative throughout the process.
